Thank You For Holding

So … yeah … I quit my job yesterday. Well, "quit" as in "gave my 30 days notice". And "job" as in "client that I have had an exclusive consulting relationship with since August".

I've never done this before and the preparation and anticipation for this was agonizing. As was the cold realization that I'll still have to work out my 30 days and that they will be full days. Sort of. And each day (starting today) will bring with it the special treat of manipulation as my insecure, passive aggressive, two-faced, communications-challenged boss attempts to woo me to stay. This campaign has already begun.

Me (today after a meeting with boss lady and Mr. External Consultant): Well I guess he wants that piece comparing y and z by Tuesday or so. (shrug/smile) Not sure what I'm going to write, but I'll think of something.

Her (lathering it on): Of course you will. You always do. That's why I love you.

Right. This after about six weeks in the late fall in which she used me for verbal target practice, often in front of other staff, at every opportunity.  This, ladies and gentlemen, is a mindfuck.

She keeps mumbling something along the lines of "I hope we can afford you when you go back to your project rates." Today, finally, I said, "Whatever I decide as my revised hourly charge, I'm worth it."  She agreed and I enjoyed the look of fear in her eyes, I must say. It is justified … I'm doubling my project rates, effective February 11, 2008. This means more than triple the rate I agreed to when I signed on for full-time with this one client, exclusively.

Note to self: Don't take on a single client exclusively. Beware the lunatic factor.

It has been an emotionally exhausting but highly fruitful time for me in terms of learning about myself. I want to write lots more but am pretty tired, through and through. I hope to have time soon to post pictures from Mexico and to write about hockey and about other non-work things. However, for some reason, this whole situation has really suppressed my ability to blog. I miss it. I'll be back soon.
